IAN WALL

LATE 17th CENTURY

CLOCK CASE

This case was in very poor condition with much that as not original, missing or damaged.  Most importantly the case was missing the dome top and it had later and poor replacements of the rear door, top mouldings, hinges and locks. The seat board, dial mask and feet were all missing.

The glue had perished and the case was taken apart.

A new rear door was made in oak and then veneered in pearwood before being ebonised.

The cae was re-assembled with any repairs being carried out to the carcas and veeners.

Here you can see the new moulding

in position.  It was made in  the

traditional manner with an oak

substrate and ebony applied in

strips on to the top and then

moulded by hand.

The case did not have a lock and one was made from scratch to fit the width of the door frame.

A considerable amount of research was carried to establish a suitable shape and style for the new dome top.  Again this was made in a traditional manner with a pine substrate being veneered in ebony and then mitred to fit.  Sound frets were cut into the sides and the mounts fitted into position.

The finished case.
